CyberAble
Services for younger people with disabilities

Learn Computing with CyberAble

The computer tuition is open to all people with disabilities between the age of 18 to 25 who are residents of the London Borough of Lewisham. The tuition is provided in small groups of up to 7 students. This enables a very high level of input from the IT staff and enables the tuition to be tailored to the particular needs of individual students.

Purpose

To provide a high level service to young disabled people in the area.

Each person has their own individualised learning plan catering to their particular needs and aspirations. This could be anything from a very intense short term course designed to make a student proficient in the use of particular software or a long term goal of accomplishing general IT skills.

Qualifications

Where possible, students are supported to access mainstream education, either during or after their course at HORiZONES. At present we offer an NPTC (National Proficiency Test Council) qualification in independent living skills. We await the establishment of NPTC courses in IT and in Skills for Working Life which are currently being ratified by NPTC. These qualifications have basic goals which are realistically achievable. The qualification is attained through the practical ability to do the subject and continuous tutor assessment. There are no formal examinations. Every student will be encouraged to further develop their potential with higher qualifications/skills and employability as a goal.

In addition to computer skills, students can be supported to improve skills in:

  • Numeracy & Literacy
  • Communication
  • Personal Presentation
  • Self Confidence

All courses have a well qualified and experienced tutor.
