Horticulture with HORiZONES
In order to realize the specific needs of people with disabilities in the 18 to 25 year age range, the service has been successfully running a vocational training project in horticulture.
Purpose
To provide young disabled people with vocational skills that have basic achievable goals leading to a recognized qualification (National Proficiency Test Council - NTPC), in a supportive and caring environment. Every student will be encouraged to further develop their potential with higher qualifications and or employability as a goal. Course Details Students will be studying to achieve the NTPC vocational Foundation Certificate (initially level A) in Horticulture. This course will cover 3 basic units: - Unit 41 Vegetable Production
- Unit 42 Floristry, Bedding & Pot Plant Production
- Unit 43 Machinery & Gardening Care
The emphasis of the course is on practical skills and the ability to DO the work. In addition to computer skills, students can be supported to improve skills in: - Numeracy & Literacy
- Communication
- Personal Presentation
- Self Confidence
Entry Details
Open to Lewisham residents with physical or learning disabilities aged 18 to 25. Entry is based on a visit to the centre and informal interview. The course is designed to last a maximum period of two years and can be joined at any time during the year. The course consists of one day per week on horticultural skills. Additional supporting skills sessions will be added as required. Normal training day will be between 10.00am and 3.00pm with a break for lunch.
