INSERTING A TABLE

If you may to include a table within a text document to display data there are several ways to create them in Word. Begin by placing the blinking cursor where you want the table to appear in the document and choose one of the following methods. There are two ways to add a table to the document using the Insert feature:

 

Click the Insert Table icon on the standard toolbar. Drag the mouse along the grid, highlighting the number of rows and columns for the table.


Or, click on Table on the menu bar, then click on Insert in the pop-down menu, then click on Table. The Insert Table box below should appear on the screen:

Type in the number of rows and columns for the table and then click OK.

DRAWING A TABLE

You can also draw a table onto the document:

  1. Draw the table by clicking on Table on the menu bar, then click Draw Table. The blinking cursor will change to a pencil and the Tables and Borders toolbar shown below will appear on the screen:

  2. Draw the table with the mouse.
  3. If you make a mistake, click on the Eraser and drag the mouse over the area to be deleted.

  4. To draw more cells, click on Draw Table .

 

INSERTING ROWS AND COLUMNS

Once you have drawn the table, insert additional rows by placing the cursor in the row you want to be adjacent to. Click on Table on the menu bar, then click on Insert, then click on either Rows Above or Rows Below.

Or, select an entire row and right-click with the mouse. Choose Insert Rows from the shortcut menu.

You can use a similar procedure to insert a column. Add a new column by placing the cursor in a cell adjacent to where the new column will be added. Click on Table, then click on Insert, then on click Columns to the Left or Columns to the Right. Or, select the column, right-click with the mouse, and select Insert Columns.

 

MOVING A RESIZING A TABLE

A four-sided moving arrow and open box resizing handle will appear on the corners of the table if the mouse is placed over the table. Click and drag the four-ended arrow to move the table and release the mouse button when the table is positioned where you want it. Click and drag the open box handle to resize the table. Change the column widths and row heights by clicking the cell dividers and dragging them with the mouse.

USING THE TABLES AND BORDERS TOOLBAR

The Tables and Borders toolbar allows you to add border styles, shading, text effects, alignment, and more options to your table.

To access this toolbar click on Table on the menu bar, then click on Draw Table.

Or, click on View in the menu bar, then click on Toolbars, then click on Tables and Borders.

You will need to highlight the cells of the table you want to format. Click and drag the mouse over the cells, or use the following shortcuts:

Click the bottom, left corner of the cell when a black arrow appears

Click outside the table to the left of the row

One column

Table|Select|Column

Click outside the table above the column when a black arrow appears

UNDERSTANDING TABLE PROPERTIES

You can usUse the Table Properties box to modify the alignment of the table with the body text and the text in the table.To open up the box click on Tables on the menu bar, then click on Table Properties. The box below should appear on the screen:

 

 

 

Exercises

  1. Open the document 'Week days' in your folder.


  2. After the text insert a table with 7 columns and 6 rows:

  4. Make the second horizontal like thicker (3pt) than the rest:

  6. Fill in the top row of boxes with the days of the week (you may have to enlarge the 3rd column slightly to fit the word 'Wednesday' in. Click on the 4th vertical line and drag it slightly to the right).


  7. Fill in the dates for a 30 day month with the 1st being on a Wednesday. Use the tab button to move the cursor to the next box after each date entry:

  9. Save the document as 'Week days with table' in your folder.


  10. Close the document.
